THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA -- Why It Was REALLY BUILT -LOlympic Games in     Beijing

<
One of the world's most perplexing mysteries
is WHY the Great Wall of China was built.
<
Almost everyone believes the Great Wall was
constructed for only one reason: that is, to prevent
China from being invaded.
<
Some others ( i.e., Chinese historical scholars)
claim it was built to serve as a permanent barrier
between the agricultural Chinese in the south  and
the Xiong Nu (the nomadic cattle-raisers) in the north,
since they apparently got along like cats and dogs.
<
Nonsense! Nothing could be further from the truth.
<
Anyone with a semblance of common sense realizes
that, if the Great Wall had been constructed to keep
an enemy out or to keep the peace within, it never
would've have been extended to such a great length
-- nearly 4,000 miles -- and continue through so many
isolated areas, including mountain chains and through
deserts, a great distance from civilization.
<
And, besides, the Great Wall --- about 25 feet high -- couldn't have
done an adequate job of protecting the Chinese from an invasion
anyway.
<
This was proven explicitly eight centuries ago when the Mongolian
hordes of Genghis Khan successfully scaled
the wall at numerous locations and eventually conquered most of China.
<
The real reason The Great Wall of China was originally constructed had
nothing whatsoever to do with preventing
an invasion but, instead, to keep their people inside China
and keep outsiders from coming in
<
China's leaders adamantly opposed the prospect
of the mingling of their race with those in neighboring countries that
they ordered the start of the mind-boggling,
gargantuan undertaking to make such intermingling
virtually impossible on a large scale.
<
They were concerned about the possible ``contamination''
of their race by mingling -- and mating -- with non-Chinese.
<
Many scientific textbooks claim that construction of the original
section of The Great Wall began around 400 B.C.
but various scientists, most Chinese, seriously question this dating
and believe it had begun much earlier.
<
Indeed, it did.
<
The original Great Wall was some 2,000 miles long and,
at a later time, construction began on another 2,000
miles or so, through the mountains and deserts.
<
The desire was simply to keep the Chinese race pure
and it happened again in the 1930s in Germany under
the Third Reich.
<
More recently, the idea re-surfaced with the decision
to construct a wall to keep illegal immigrants
from entering the United States from Mexico.

Invaders can go around objects. The nomads live in wilderness
and places far from civilization anyway. That is the point of being a
nomad. The extreme length was needed to prevent invaders from going
around.
In fact, invaders throughout history have taken the long way
around barriers just to confuse the enemy. Read Exodus. The Hebrews
went the long way from Egypt to Canaan. I'll bet the Canaanites wish
edthey built a Great Wall across the desert. That rinky-dink wall at
Jericho didn't do a bit of good.
> <

The Great Wall was a highway in addition to a wall. It provided a
smooth road for Imperial troops to get to the point of invasion. The
height was just supposed to provide a minor delay. Without troops on
the wall, there would be no hope of stopping invaders who were really
determined.
> <

I guess the Chinese at that point didn't have enough troops, or
sufficiently good communications, to send marching along the Great
Wall. The primary function of the Great Wall was as a road for troops.
The height was probably needed to keep the road dry. Armies bog down
in a heavy rain. I forgot who said that mud is an armies worse
general. Therefore, the height was a way of lifting the troops over
the mud.

Yes, I think that was a secondary reason. However, 25 feet is not
enough to keep civilians out by itself. The Chinese had ladders very
early in their history. A peasant who want out, or a nomad who wanted
in, could have easily found a way over the wall if there was no one
guarding it. So the primary use of the Wall was as a road, regardless
of the particular use. The purpose of the wall probably changed
several times over the years.
However, maybe the two purposes of the wall aren't so clear cut.
There isn't always that much difference between an invasion and a wave
of immigration. Maybe some of these "Mongol Invasions" were seen as
"colonization." When the Europeans went into American Indian lands,
they saw it as merely moving into the wide open spaces. Not all the
American Indians saw it that way. They saw it as an invasion. So maybe
we are making a difference out of nothing.

If you read Mein Kampf, you will find Adolf Hitler referring to
the invasion of Poland as a colonization. He thought that war should
always be followed by genocide and physical settlement of Germans into
the emptied lands. I didn't want peoples "mixing." So in his head,
invasion and emigration were one and the same.
> <
> They were concerned about the possible ``contamination''

You know, I am coming to agree with you partly. However, the Wall
was still effective to stop invasion as long as it was used in
conjunction with troops. It was no good for stopping the mixing unless
guarded by troops. Thus, I think it was a road for troops.
That fence between U.S. and Mexico is not going to be worth
anything unless it is constantly guarded. Either directly through
troops of some kind, or indirectly through remote technology. With
remote technology, it will take troops to get to the point of
breaching.
In a way, I can see this fence evolving into a defense against
invasion. Mexicans and other peoples are going to organize into groups
for breaching the walls. Already, terrorists at war with the U.S. are
trying to cross into our borders from the Mexican American border.
Simiiarly, the fence in Israel to keep the Palestinians out may very
well evolve into an antiinvasion boundary. An arms race can easily
turn a fence into a high tech defense boundary. So I don't think there
is a sharp boundary between an invasion and undocumented emigration.
Please keep in mind the division between emigration and invasion
isn't always sharp. And it wasn't always sharp in medieval China.

I have tried to walk on the Great Wall, it is quite difficult. I think
it would be faster to walk along it.

I know someone whose father claimed to have driven an Austin 7 (i.e.
'baby' austin http://www.vintageaustins.co.uk/cars/herbert.htm ) along
the top of the wall some time back in the 1920s or 30s.

Try driving though this

I did walk some of that wall. I am an experienced hiker and used to
walking long distances. I certainly found it tough. Up and down. The
ground is not flat. The other problem is it is not straight. Even a
comparative short distance wore me out.

I suspect that not even an Austin 7 could get through that door at the
top of the stairs. It could have managed the stairs though.
