What are the oldest signs of human habitation in Sri Lanka and what
period are they dated to, according to a majority of archaeologists?
Which archaeological study provides the data best suited to the
drawing of an inference (by someone motivated to do so) that there
were humans in Lanka 1.7 million years back? (I got the following in
my email)

Subject: Fw: NASA SHUTTLE IMAGES OF RAMAYANA BRIDGE MUST WATCH
WE ALL INDIANS KNOW THAT THERE IS VARADI ( Bridge) BETWEEN INDIA AND
SRILANKA WHICH WAS CONSTRUCTED BY " VANARA SENA " IN TRETA YUGA. BUT
NOW NASA PEOPLE FIND IT THAT IT IS THERE AND THEY NAMED IT AS " ADAM
BRIDGE". IS IT CORRECT TO CALL the ancient Bridge WITH THAT new and
Alien Name???? THINK OF IT. Will they ever accept if we change the
name of the "London Bridge" as "Laxman Jhoola"? !!!? SO, NOW, WE WILL
SPREAD THE TRUTH ALL OVER THE WORLD. DO YOUR CONTRIBUTION, SEND THIS
TO EVERYBODY. NASA SHUTTLE IMAGES OF A MYSTERIOUS ANCI ENT BRIDGE
BETWEEN INDIA AND SRILANKA Courtesy : NASA Digital Image Collection
The recently discovered bridge currently named as Adam's Bridge made
of chain of shoals, c.18 mi (30 km) long, in the Palk Strait between
India and Sri Lanka, reveals a mystery behind it. The bridge's unique
curvature and composition by age reveals that it is man made. The
legends as well as Archeological studies reveal that the first signs
of human inhabitants in Sri Lanka date back to the a primitive age,
about 17,50,000 years ago and the bridge's age is also almost
equivalent. This information is a crucial aspect for an insight into
the mysterious legend called Ramayana, which was supposed to have
taken place in tretha yuga (more than 17,00,000 years ago). In this
epic, there is a mentioning about a bridge, which w as built between
Rameshwaram (India) and Srilankan coast under the supervision of a
dynamic and invincible figure called Rama who is supposed to be the
incarnation of the supreme. This information may not be of much
importance ! t o the archeologist s who are interested in exploring
the origins of man, but it is sure to open the spiritual gates of the
people of the world to have come to know an ancient history linked to
the Indian mythology. SO, NOW , WE WILL SPREAD THE TRUTH ALL OVER THE
WORLD. DO YOUR CONTRIBUTION, SEND THIS TO EVERYBODY. Fo

I am sorry that people are deceiving you.

There are no such archaeological studies, and the 'bridge' is hardly
recently discovered although the NASA photograph got a lot of attention.
Chatterjee wrote about it almost 50 years ago. It is considered by
reputable Indian scientists to be natural, not manmade, and I am surprised
that people are suggesting these Indian scientists are wrong.
For instance, Dr. S. M., Ramasamy has concluded that it is made of
natural coral reefs and sand shoals. See also:

of India during the Quaternary Period (with 4 photos and 1 map)

Chatterjee (1961), citation given above, indicated that
Adam’s Bridge is a reef submerged by post-glacial sea level rise
long before the NASA satellite photos became available. Also, one
unpublished geologic map shows the western "abutment" of this
so-called "bridge" to consist entirely of a natural beach ridge plain,
which has partially encloses a small reef. The ridges are intact and
show absolutely no evidence of having been either constructed or
even modified to be part any sort of artificial structure. In addition
at least three ship channels have been dug through Adam's Bridge
without finding a single sign of it being an artificial structure.

It is probably about 3500 years old.

Whoever sent it to you by email, you should tell them that they should not
dismiss or ignore the work of the Asian scientists who have studied this.

Watch for believers finding some stones that do not belong there and concluding
it was all man-made from the seafloor up. Do not be surprised if they brought
the stones with them. There is a strong political movement of religious hindu
nationalists in India these days. They controlled the last Parliament until they
were kicked out. They funded "research" into folk medicine to cure AIDS and
such. So in fact those party members my be behind this claim and if "confirmed"
in the future will almost certainly be associated with it.

I had enough to say about Adam's bridge although I now have more to
say. What I don't know anything about is the archaeology of human
habitation in Sri Lanka, so that's what I need to know something
about.
