Grasp mammoth firmly by tail. Lift and turn.
It is expected that at least half will have buttons.
Do NOT press, mammoths are often ticklish.

Great you told me, I wouldn't have figured it alone.
*GG* no, rather I wish those buttons would have worked, the prank was
just too great

For any of you that arent' familliar with Jasper Fforde you'll find that the
Mammoth Migration Website is a mock-up of a functional website, ( it is not
intended to be a fully functioning site). They are merely a part of the
world that Jasper Fforde has created around his Thursday Next novels.
If you've never read anything by this author, start with The Ayre Affair and
see how you go. It's satire for people who don't mind thinking a bit and
have no fear of the totally bizarre! If you like Hitch Hiker's Guide to the
Galaxy, you should love it, (Fforde doesn't write sci-fi but it's the
nearest comparison I can come up with).

His books commonly get reviewed on rec.arts.sf.written. He writes
alternative history,
http://trashotron.com/agony/columns/06-28-02.htm
he writes about time travel.
There's a thread in rec.arts.sf.written from 2002 titled:
Will Alternate History, Jasper Fforde and Mary Gentle Take Over SF?
I've seen his books call mystery stories as well, but I'd classify them as
somewhere in fantasy & science fiction.

hmmm... sort of.
Basically his characters are able to travel in the world of fiction and he
has great fun playing with what the characters get up to in great literature
when they're not on the page. The idea of Miss Haversham and Mr Toad having
drag races around the A419 Swindon bypass is completely brilliant. He also
has places where Nursery Rhyme characters are real and the secret world of
illicit porridge trading to bears is a dark and very dangerous place.
The time travel bit relates to the Chrono Guard but I won't even attempt to
explain them!!
It actually pays NOT to think too hard about Fforde's creations. It can
really make the grey matter hurt!

His latest book has time travel at the heart of it.

Booooooooohhhhhhh!!!!! *annoyed face, shedding tears*
Honestly, this was a wonderful site. Actually, I once saw a migrating
mammoth myself, just south of Chiemsee in Bavaria, it nearly stepped
on my tent one morning; and I actually took a photo, but attachments
are not welcome in this ng.
