Can you do archaeology on linguistics? I suppose you can do something
with inscriptions and the like, and coins, and literary texts, but...
is this a real discipline?
All the best,

He wrote a book called Linguistic Archeology, so it seems he coined
the term. I think it has more to do with tracing the lineage of words
and scripts, and using that info to shed light on archeological
questions.
Doug would not consider it a science.
BTW, Doug- almost every Yoga tape that my GF has someone saying "Yoga
is a science" or "the science of Yoga" or "since Yoga is a science"
somewhere on it.

Of course it does.
And Nyland thinks that all languages come from Basque.

That's a very good question. Taking part in this conference looks
to me like an act of naivete, or of desperation.
I, too, don't agree with Stanford's Solutrean hypothesis, but
still am interested enough in it to want to see whether it goes
anywhere with further research. Presenting at this conference
would seem to me to be a very bad move for any serious discussion
of that hypothesis.
I wonder whether the conference organizers went for someone
relatively mainstream to establish credibility, and Stanford was
the one they snagged?

This is also somewhat disappointing, for the above reasons.

It's a pretty old page, though still useful.
I see that Eric has been consistent about his call for courtesy
to nutcases for a long time. :-)

Courtesy - period.
Not so much courtesy as absence of aggressive savagery.
Having said that, I can only say I am disappointed at the naivette of
some of the people who are participating. Did you see that the blurb
extolls that rogue Gavin Menzies.

Woops! That got sent off before I was ready. :-(
Try again.

Courtesy - period.

The point that was referred to in that URL when they took my name in
vain was not that I support Edo Nyland - quite the reverse in fact -
but that just because he believes all languages are descended from
Basque does not mean that ALL of his ideas are rubbish. It's a long
time since I read anything by him but as I recall he did have some
interesting insights into the Homer in the North Sea arguments.
Incidentally, he's not the Edo Nyland who protests he is not the other
one. As you would expect, it's the other way around.
Having said that, I can only say I am disappointed at the naivette of
some of the people who are participating in the Atlantic Conference.
Did you see that the blurb extolls that rogue Gavin Menzies? Who would
want to be associated with him?
