Does alt.history.british cover anything British, or is it just another forum for college sophomores to spew forth rants about American politics?

Is there a better newsgroup that actually focuses on British history?

The advice is always the same:
You discuss British history and we will respond. Kill-file all the threads
about Bush and you will see it focussed on British history.

If you use a killfile to remove the non British posts and posters,
then there is actually a fair amount of British history and subjects
that impinge on British history.

Not that I know of, and to get one that was purely British history, it
would have to be moderated and moderation often kills lively
discussion even if it does stop the flames, trolls and OT subjects.

What is it that particularly interests you?

Learning interests me.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know nearly as much as I should
about history.  Great Britain particularly interests me because it's really
the history of the modern world.  It is very difficult to study any nation
in even basic detail without encountering effects of the British Empire to
one degree or another.

Not to mention that the UK has the most hip flag of any nation.

And you don't want to ask about it - or do you already know?

The Brit flag is hip now because of the war
for democracy in Iraq.
But it can be unhip among
those peoples who feel oppressed by its lieges.

That particular red rag wasn't exactly a flag of liberty the last time it
went to Iraq.

In fact there are very few places in the Middle East that it has flown over
in the past where the locals weren't delighted to see it be hauled down.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time,  like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.

Probably.
But was there any nation that did not welcome it's colonial
ruler leaving

Perhaps Britain in the 5th Century. (although we may not
have had much idea of nationhood)

Well there's a few we can't get rid of because they won't let us go...

Gibraltar,  The Falklands,  one of the Carabean island nations.

Watching your protecting army pull away when the barbarians are landing on
the beach across the bay is probably always a bad experience.

I imagine a reasonable proportion of the population of South Vietnam didn't
want the US to leave them either...

Shush.

There are folks here who'll be mortally offended if you happen to mention
that a majority of the UK citizens resident in Ulster want to remain
British.

What's more some of them will say it's our fault because someone now long
dead partitioned the place eighty odd years ago.

Even mre credulity if you mention that it's the Irish Scots (not English) in
Ulster that are the problem - and tell them that the only religion the English
imposed on the Irish was Roman Catholicism. ;-)

A nation can be independent and still take pride in whatever British
heritage it maintains.
That describes a fair number of Commonwealth nations, does it not?

For all the pride Americans take in their Bill of Rights, it's easy to see
the English heritage in those laws.

Does alt.history.british cover anything British, or is it just another forum for college sophomores to spew forth rants about American politics?

Is there a better newsgroup that actually focuses on British history?
 :::::::::::
 May I suggest:-
Ask questions which are clearly On Topic.(please)
Do not cross post.(unless you are trying to consult
other history groups on an appropriate subject)
Do not answer any posts from those who
have nothing to say about British history.

If your browser is Outlook Express, then click on the
left hand of the subject line to bring up the red circle
with the bar to ignore a thread.
Sometimes I use the delete key to remove offending
messages in blocks or singly. This option is not
available by menu. just select the message(s) and
 press delete.

The Block Sender Routine seems to work now and
again. I have found it is easiest to reuse the option
rather than try to find out why it did not work.
