Nope.  It was B. Beauty.  I think his
line goes (in the adaptation):
"I liked Squire Gordon and Birtwick Park
but I missed my freedom."  Then there is
an account of his conversation with Ginger,
the chestnut mare that bites people:

"I had nothing to do with being assigned your
stall and I am not a colt.  I am a grown-up
and I wish to live in peace."

I dare not tell my Grade 2 student of Ginger's
tragic end for fear she will not finish reading
the book.

Bit too anthropomorphic for my tastes. I would rather Cheech and
Chong's "Black Lassie, but don't bring that up with a Grade 2er.
