Nobody wants to complain about the opening ceremony? Or the bouquets given
to the medalists?
No questions about Ron Barrassi walking on water?

Watching the closing ceremony live now - but they're running it according to
Aussie Rules - incomprehensible!

There are very few public displays in Melbourne which don't feature Aussie
Rules - in this case probably more so because it wasn't a Games event.

Just watching the closing ceremony, I've seen quite a bit of the competition
(it is on overnight here and repeated later) great I thought.

Yes, they should rename it the "Australia Games"

Ron who?

The games are hardly being noticed in Canada (only the CBC mentions
them) as this is the run-up to the Stanley Cup playoffs. International
curling championships are in the offing. The ice is only just off the
river and they have not filled the Canal yet. My yard is still half
covered in snow. Summer sports do not have much currency here at the
moment.

You should have watched - Canada were 3rd. in the medals tables!

But you would never have known anyone apart from Australia were
competing if you had been watching Australian TV. Talk about
parochial.

Sorry, but I have to say, "big whoop." I laud the decision to fold the
games for the disabled into the elite games, and the decision of
Canadian team to make the paralympian Chantal Petitclerc their flag
bearer, but apart from that they seem irrelevant. I have seen nothing
of the broadcasts (if it's not live it's not worth it, and CBC radio
regularly scooped its TV services). When the Winter Olympiad was on it
was wall to wall over here, and a fair few Yanks were able to pick it
on CBC (a refuge from their daytime drudgery of soaps and talk shows).
The Commonwealth Games were also competing for air time with the
Winter Paralympiad, so attention spans were even shorter. I think the
gold medal win of the sledge hockey team as it bumped off more
favoured squads got more coverage than any event in Melbourne.

I had actually checked out the games' site over the last two weeks
because I wanted to know if Martin Sinclair, a sometime poster to SMN
and an officer of the Royal Scots, was competing for Scotland in
rifle -- he was, and earned a silver medal in the pairs prone event.

The BBC ran it live on three TV channels + text information + updates at major
watching times.

That's over a licence-funded broadcaster. CBC TV is subsidized by the
state, but not overly much, the majority of its operating revenue
comes from the advertising time it sells. I suspect they did the sums
and found they would not finish in the black.

The Commonwealth Games are just not seen as a major event here unless
they're held here.

More pairs prone events could soon change that!

If you get a chance, mention it to Martin. Let's let him try it out on
his Mrs.

Dear oh dear, saying that in Victoria is enough to have people phoning
immigration to report a suspicious alien.
