If anyone has seen this program can they tell me
who they thought was the King of "Essex", buried
in the excavated tomb?
Did they find anything with an inscription or other
data which firmly placed the finds in time and/or
to a segment of history?
I saw just a fragment last night.

Great topic. Does anyone know where to find information on the sword? Next
to  coins, swords are the most helpful in dating finds as there is a great
deal known about them. The one article I could find which mentions it shows
only a fuzzy x-ray. -the Troll

I don't think they have worked on it yet hippo, the artefacts were lifted in
soil blocks.

"The sword's tang can be seen in X-ray with two milled ring fittings,
possibly gold. There are also buckle-like shapes in the soil block, which
may be part of a scabbard or belt."

The local council was claiming last week that it will cost £500,000 to
remove the road protestors who have set up camp there. Apparently the
protestors have been digging tunnels on the site, which I think is
scandalous.

Very exciting. We have swords of the period down pretty well by now. It, and
its mounts, will say a great deal about the status of the fellow buried
there. When they assay the gold in the Merovingian coins to more closely
determine their age, we'll have a very solid low date for the burial. I've
gotta remember to keep an eye on this one. Thanks, Jamie. -the Troll
