Sorry I didn't produce any rankings at the end of the group stage but a rather
nasty bit of reality bit at the weekend and concentrated the mind elsewhere.

The continued rankings include all 32 teams as their scores against the teams
that succeed in the later rounds affect those rankings.

19 Spain
17 Brazil*
17 Germany*
16 Argentina*
15 Italy*
15 Portugal*
13 Switzerland
12 England*
11 Netherlands
9 Ecuador
9 France*
9 Ukraine*
8 Ghana
8 Sweden
6 Mexico
5 Australia
5 South Korea
4 Paraguay
3 Czech republic
3 Ivory Coast
2 Angola
2 Croatia
2 Poland
-1 Tunisia
-1 USA
-2 Iran
-2 Trinidad & Tobago
-3 Japan
-3 Saudi Arabia
-4 Togo
-5 Costa Rica
-6 Serbia & Montenegro

So what went wrong with Spain? According to my assessment they should have
been in the final - and France should now be out. The other anomaly is
Switzerland and Ukraine but, in my opinion, both should have been dumped out
of the competition for lack of interest and Australia been given another
chance to meet Italy. Other than those the table shows that England and
Portugal had the most difficult tasks in getting through to the next round
which should make their match on Saturday 'interesting'!

Predictions? You must be joking!

OK Germany v Italy and England v Brazil in the semis - but at this stage there
is too much luck (esp with the referees and injuries) to make prediction
anything but a guess.
A Germany v England final is a distinct possibility but the chances of England
scoring their 4th goal in the last 10 seconds are a touch remote. ;-)

BTW [bit of real history]
40 years ago I watched the England semi-final match in a youth hostel and the
Germany match in a bar - both in Germany. Thankfully we managed to escape that
country just in time for the final. ;-)

The officiating is shamefully biased. Some of them ought never to be
allowed onto a pitch outside their home country. Australia can
rightfully claim, "We wuz robbed!"

Some teams should have been banned for masquerading as footballers, more
like amateur dramatics. I'm surprised that a 5th official has not been
appointed to watch the TV coverage and help the ref out with the divers and
head holders - and head butters - if they are really serious in cleaning up
the game.

It's still supposed to be a physical sport, but a lot of yellow cards have
been sprayed around making the game a joke at times.

I've got the Argentinians on the sweepy at work, so I've got to sell my soul
for the posibility of winning £20.....!

In "nineteen shixty shixt" as Motty would say, I was in Hyde Park on my
first trip to London, never knew there was a footy game on, but never been
allowed to forget there was since then! Mever been allowed to forget who won
either.....!

Jim Baxter is God....

there has already been a record amount of both yellow and red cards, ands
its just over halfway..

We have had 56 matches - with only 8 more to go! Though I agree that the
refereeing has been unbalanced. I would like to have seen more red cards for
players who dive and try to get their opponents carded - just yellow for
ordinary dives. But ordinary play needs to be left alone to flow.

I see another conspiracy, this time a Russian referee (Ivan Sendemov)
getting shot of the Portugese midfield and Dutchmen just for a laugh, to
ease England into the semis....

Wait a sec, do England use a midfield or just punt from back to front or
wait for dead balls?

Only the results matter!
