Renia Simmonds -- Former Hot Chick -- 30 Years Ago

D. Spencer Hines - 29 Aug 2006 22:47 GMT
My informants tell me that Renia used to make the rounds in both Bristol and
Brighton and was quite the hot number indeed ---- 30 years ago.

You Go, Girl!

In both Bristol and Brighton, to be sure.

She has admitted to Brighton -- but not to Bristol, understandably -- Cary
Grant's home town.
-------------------------------------------------------

"You must be a hot chick."

"Well, you'll have to ask "The Boys" about that!  But, Tiglath, you should
have been there when I was doing the clubs of Brighton about 25 years ago!
Hot?"

Renia Simmonds -- 16 February 2001
--------------------------------------------------------

After all, a girl needs a little out-of-town fun as well ---- away from
prying eyes, you know.

And Bristol was further away for her than Brighton.

God knows we see that sort of thing in Waikiki.

In fact, DSH has even taken advantage of that delicious phenomenon, on
occasion....

I'm not surprised at all that Renia doesn't want to talk about her escapades
in Bristol.

A girl has to have some secrets.

Why, I've never told her *everything* I've done in Tijuana, Tokyo, Paris,
Berlin, Hong Kong, Saigon, Bangkok, Singapore, Moscow, Honolulu or Rome
either.

'Nuff Said.

Never been to Bristol. My stomping ground was Brighton, as I previously
said. Only by 1976, I was already engaged to the man to whom I am still
married. Prior to that, well, yup, dancing was what I liked to do, and I
danced all over the country. I lived and worked in Edinburgh and Essex,
so I danced there. Commuted to London, so I danced there. Moved to
Germany and danced there. And I'm still dancing in Greece.

Edinburgh was even further away and it was my home city.

What sort of thing?

eh?

Indeed. But I've never been to Bristol. Don't know anything about it. In
those days, the furthest west I had ever been was Longleat and
Stonehenge. Although we did get to Cheddar Gorge, but we still managed
to avoid Bristol.

Thank goodness. I wouldn't want to know about ANY of your escapades.

Would have loved to join you but the Reading Carriage Sales
are on the 6th and I have customers to meet.
On the 7th I set off across England with two horses and
won't be around for a couple of weeks.
I've already admired the picture of Dr. Ruth; for the rest
I couldn't possibly comment due to insufficient evidence.
If you are anywhere near Avebury on the Sunday I hear the
pub there used to collect anecdotes about visiting Americans.
I intend to give it a visit.

Sorry, I'll be in the Wild West for some days around then (including
Bristol, Hines!).
Give more notice next time!

Ah, this land of dangerous driving, potholes, stray cats and dogs,
stinking drains. Yes, livin' the dream!

Could make The Ship (sorry no shovel) in Bristol
An OK pub but the parking for horses is abysmal.

Given that this is alt.history.british, pedantry might be in order...

That's "Shovell", as in Sir Cloudesley.

Well, wrong country, Vince.  But I will say that after seeing Dr. Ruth and
reading her C.V., I will concur with the many who say you married up ... you
lucky dog ... you must be good at something or other ...%)

Have a good time in the land of our Queen!

This D. Spencer Hines is creepy. Why is he stalking you with his
private Gestapo 'informants'?

It's his hobby. My hobby is exposing his perversions for all to read. He
falls for it every time.

Maybe you can get him to admit he is the reason the good bars in Misawa
are signed "Japanese Only". They used to have a little sign below "And
that means you Mr. Hines, whether your wife is with you or not"

"Recently I visited Misawa, Aomori Prefecture, to see friends at the
local American Air Force base. Going out for drinks on the evening of
March 28, 2002, we discovered several cheap bars (all you can drink for
2000-4000 yen an hour, hostesses' drinks included) a few minutes from
the base's main gate. However, they had signs outside saying "JAPANESE
ONLY" and denied us entry." http://www.debito.org/misawaexclusions.html

>From some reading about Japanese practices some years ago, they seem to
have these "Japanese Only" because they assume non-Japanese are unable
to speak Japanese, or worse, have manners which are unacceptable to
them. Why, only as recent as 1961 did the PGA remove the "whites only"
from its constituion to access on their golf clubs. You can't expect
every country to be as modern as the US of A in their liberal
attitudes.

If you read the cite the bars are those run, more or less, by yakuza.
They do not want American servicemen in their bars because they don't
understand the "billing" process, don't have much money and are too
aggresive with the girls. The author is a Caucasian naturalized
Japanese citizen, they still won't let him in. The bar girls and
hostesses are all foreigners, Filipinos and Russians by and large,
which is a prestige item in Japan. One of the explanations given by the
Japanese authorities is that Misawa is in a very rural conservative
part of Japan and they worry about their sweet lovely daughters being
"forced" to get social with dirty, poor foreigners.
