I suppose the poor Georgians equate "democracy" with prosperity.

Errrrrr..... Couple things to be remembered: (a) Georgia is a multiethnic
country, (b) a strongest fraction of the winning opposition (AFAIK) are the
_Georgian_ nationalists.
Having this in mind, it is rather easy to imagine that Adjaria will try to
follow Abkhazia (ditto for some other areas), and the area will again become
a very interesting place. IIRC, one of the opposition leaders at some time
called for recognoton of independent Chechnia and the Russians have military
bases in Adjaria and <whatever the name of the area populated by the
Armenians>.
