Another tale of the Duke:-
While walking home one evening, the decrepit Duke of Wellington was
approached by another elderly gentleman intent on assisting him across
Piccadilly. "I thank you, sir," Wellington remarked, having reached his
door.
Thus encouraged, the man, shaking Wellington's hand, broke into a gushing
speech. "I never dared to hope," he concluded, "that I might see the day
when I might render the slightest assistance to the greatest man that ever
lived."
Wellington fixed the man with a critical eye. "Don't be a damned fool, sir,"
he then remarked, before promptly disappearing into his home.

Thanks for this vignette from the life of Lord Wellesley.
It was in 1808 that my main Brit ancestor, one Jeremiah
Baker, sailed for America from Manchester docks to
escape the reach of the Redcoat Army recruitment for
the Peninsular Campaign against King Boney.
Cheers, David H
