Affleck: Clean-cut Romney GOP pick in ‘08

By Gayle Fee and Laura Raposa

Wednesday, May 30, 2007

“Gone, Baby, Gone” director Ben Affleck, who tried mightily - but
unsuccessfully - to get Sen. John Kerry elected to the White House, said he
expects ex-Gov. Mitt Romney to be the Republican nominee in 2008.

Chatting about the upcoming presidential race on the season finale of
“Real Time with Bill Maher,” the Cambridge homey said he thinks the GOP will
end up with Romney because the ex-gov looks good, has nice hair - and the
Republicans really don’t have anyone else.

“He says he doesn’t like abortion and he’s all clean-cut and he looks
like a Ken doll,” said Affleck who was doing a rather amusing imitation of
our ex-gov during the Romney rant.

“The Mormonism thing is really suspect,” he added, “but they’ll take it
at this point. I mean, who else do they have?  Crazy (Rudy) Giuliani and
(John) McCain who’s completely insane?  They don’t have any other options.”

Humorist P.J. O’Rourke, who was also on the panel, pointed out that
Romney has a “fundamental problem” with conservatives: “He was governor of
Massachusetts.”

Which really sent Ben off the deep end!

“ ‘I hate liberals,’ is what he’s basically now saying.  He’s holding
his nose saying, ‘I wish I didn’t even have to be in Massachusetts.  I’m
sorry I was there.  I hated them when I was governor.  I hated
Massachusetts. I was governor because I wanted to kill them all!’ ”

Added Maher: “If he were a movie, he’d be ‘Say Anything.’ ”

Affleck, a lifelong Democrat who was identified as “actor/activist” on
the show, also had some harsh words for his own party , launching an
f-bomb-laden tirade against the pols who “caved in” on the president’s Iraq
spending bill.

“These (bleeping) people,” he said.  “This is the (bleeping) problem
with that.  Democrats live in fear of basically being called cowards,” he
said.

Affleck surmised that the Demmies were afraid to demand timelines for
troop withdrawal from Iraq in the spending bill because the president would
slam them while they were away for the Memorial Day weekend.

“While they were on vacation they were afraid of being criticized,” he
said.  “So . . . they sacrificed their core political beliefs.  And they
wonder why people call them (bleeping) weak.”

Romney’s main mouth Eric Fehrnstrom, when asked to comment about the
Affleck rant, told the Track in an e-mail: “I think the polite thing to say
is no comment.  We don’t spend a lot of time thinking about what Hollywood
actors are saying about the presidential campaign.”

Unlike John Kerry - Ben’s last No. 1 presidential pick.

romney stands for nothing.  he will say whatever he thinks will get him
elected. he was never in mass except for when the sox were playing{he has
season tix}. and do you want a man who will bad mouth his home because he
thinks it will play well in the south and mid-west. he has no beliefs or
loyalty.
he is a goody two-shoes straight arrow and his being a mormon should be a
non-issue, but whacko religious wignuts will hold it against him.

i didn't vote for him when he ran and he won't get a vote from
massachusetts again.

if he hates us in massachuseets as much as he now claims he should move.
