Norman Cantor's biggest problem at NYU was that he was a brilliant,
sensible, America-loving, Conservative Jew, born in Canada.

In his era, NYU preferred well-rounded, mediocre "Liberal" Jews who would
feel at home there.

Cantor was so brilliant he was granted a full-ticket ride, all expenses
paid, to a Ph.D. in Mediaeval History at Princeton, in 1951 -- even with his
rather obscure background.

Cantor describes himself as a "Canadian Jewish cowboy" from his father's
small ranch near St. Laurent, in the Interlake District of Central Manitoba.

His undergraduate school, United College, was heavily influenced by the
ideas of its Methodist and Presbyterian founders.  Cantor understood
Protestants and absorbed their values and priorities.

They never forgave him for his Conservative views at the very Left-Wing NYU
and distrusted him because he did not share their prejudices towards the
Establishment -- but had different ones.

Cantor was certainly NOT a militant Left-Wing Jewish atheist, as were so
many of his colleagues at NYU -- and that put him out of step with the herd.

See Cantor's own _Inventing Norman Cantor: Confessions of a Medievalist_
2002 for details and explications -- a fascinating read.

Cantor was a student of Joseph Strayer 20 year Chair of the History
Department and controller of all financial aid.   Supporting your own
students was a Chair's "perk"  Cantor certainly had to be willing to
study Medieval history to get the free ride.

he himself chose medieval studies, Cantor reveals,
only because his college advisor, “chuckling” (!), told him there was
“little  competition for student money in that obscure field and a
dearth of entering  students” (8).

Vincent Brannigan sounds envious.  Vide infra.

Dr. Norman Cantor is a Master of the Well-Turned Personal Anecdote, often
self-effacing.

There was also a congenital prejudice against Jews in Ivy League History
Departments in the 1940's and 50's, where Anglo-Saxon dons ruled the roost.

Cantor was one of the first to break down those unjust barriers.

John Morton Blum, who taught me 20th Century American Politics and Culture
at Yale, was another.

Both men deserve plaudits and kudos for that.

Joseph Strayer, at Princeton, also did very useful work for the CIA and NSC.

Not any more he isn't.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time,  like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.

Nonsense...

Norman Cantor's historical works live on after his earthly death -- as is
true of any Real Mediaeval Historian, et alii -- and they contain a number
of Well-Turned Personal Anecdotes -- which can be savored at leisure by the
intelligent, educated, sensitive reader -- the Cognoscenti....

I'll bet his lectures did too.

William, you don't even have any children either, do you?

Legitimate ones, old sot.

William is a confirmed British Socialist Atheist and thinks it all ends with
his death -- a very short-sighted and selfish attitude.

not at all
I decided to study Law rather than History after my BA.  But we all knew
how the system worked

Irish Catholics also had problems, and women were unknown

there was affirmative action for second tier protestant white males from
prominent families.

Bush and Gore fit that bill

Yes, that's quite true, in the main.

Thankfully, we changed all that.

Nope.

They both became politicians ---- not Ivy League History professors.

Vince loses the thread again.

Both were accepted to Ivy league colleges based on family connections

Norman Cantor has been VERY candid in discussing various issues of Academic
Politics and Various Scandals -- Financial & Personal at New York
University.

He does this in the aforementioned book -- _Inventing Norman Cantor:
Confessions of a Medievalist_ 2002, which is well-written and a delight to
read.  It's an Academic Biography of the first water that pulls no punches.

So, it's not surprising at all that he still has many enemies at NYU and
stirs up hatred in those quarters even though he died in 2004.

Hilarious!

Pogue Swain has now become Gans's abject apologist and lickspittle lackey in
fond hopes that Gans will help him find a tenure-track academic position
after Swain completes his mini-doctoral studies at No-Name U.

How Sweet It Is!

Victoria, it just doesn't get any better than this.

Enjoy!

One thing that Gans DOES do extremely well is to provide...

Great Entertainment!

Norman  Cantor quite literally talked out of school -- so many at NYU,
including Gans, want to discredit him.

It's similar in some aspects to the consuming Bush-Hatred of the same
people -- Left-Wingers in Academia.
