A search of Google gives lots of references to a "six-pip" GMT time signal.

Here in the UK, I seem to remember a time when it was only 5-pips and there was
a bit of a fuss made when it changed to 6-pips.  Can any other UK listener
remember when the change was made?

I think, though I'm not certain, that it was always six pips. The
change was from six *identical* pips to five short and one long. This
was done to make it easier for automatic equipment to use it.

Were there ever 5?
But, being interested, I looked around and found the following. I didn't
realise there was so much hassle behind those pips!

Was it the radio or was it the daughter who woke up?
Have a nice weekend with lots of good food, nice people and silence once in
a while!

Can't imagin why they manage to wake up before the clock starts when they
are babies and as soon as they reach school-age it's the other way
round.....

I don't understand what this means.  Pips are worn on uniforms to
indicate rank, are they not?
What am I missing?

That they're talking about the equivalent of the Dominion Observatory
Time Signal given at noon on the CBC in Manitoba: "Pip, pip, pip, pip,
pip, pooop!".

Nothing really. Old Spency however feels he has missed quite a few, hence his
bitterness...
