"From Hell" authenticity questions

In the movie "From Hell," prostitutes are referred to as "unfortunates."  Was
this in fact the term that would have been used for them in Victorian England?
     Also, one woman repeatedly makes passes at other women.  I know that England
had no law against lesbianism because Queen Victoria was sure it didn't exist.
How likely was it that a woman would have blatantly made advances to another
woman?

The simple answer to that is: yes, they were.
