I am looking for some hypotheses about origins of the word 'zastoi' -
[Brezhnev]'s stagnation?

Thank you in advance!

-- While I'm in no way a Russian speaking person, I do know a little
about it, so with just a bit of intuition, knowledge and logic, I would
say that:
- 'za' is a slavic languages prefix meaning, essentially, 'per' or
'For/Pro/Of/.../Per/...';
- 'stoy' is a word resembling the English word 'stay';
- so the combo makes 'for stay(ing)';
- now, you have the 'stagnation' meaning.
