Thesmophoria - Ancient Greek festival in honor of womanhood
The Thesmophoria was a "Thanksgiving" harvest festival celebrated in
Ancient Greece annually on October 11, 12 and 13, and was especially
popular in Athens.
Our European ancestors led lives much more closely linked to the soil,
seasons and cycles of life than we do today, and honored these vital
components esoterically: in song, ceremony and custom. Yet even today
seasonal festivals grab our collective imagination.
On these dates women would gather to solemnly enact ceremonies dealing
with the powerful myth of the Goddess Demeter and her daughter,
Persephone.

Aristophanes' play 'Thesmophoriazusae' is the hilarious story of the women
of Athens celebrating the Thesmophoria, to which the men have no admittance.
They plot to kill Euripides, because of his alleged misogyny. I had the
great pleasure of seeing it performed at Epidavros a few years ago.
