Columbus And A Flat World

Why is Columbus credited as proving the world is round, when he never made
it to the indies by sailing west?

Magellan was the first to circle the globe.

Actually the Egyptians and the Greeks proved it mathematically and their
calculations of it's circumference were quite close.
