I've seen movies in which pallbearers have their heads covered by hoods.  Is
this just done for effect or does it have a historical basis?
  Thanks to anyone who answers.

What movie(s) are you talking about?   A movie showing some terror network
burying one of its own?

(Janatrude) I was thinking of movies like Mario Bava's "The Whip and the Body"
in which pallbearers  are shown wearing red hoods over their heads.
