While looking for other things I found the following, which I think is
interesting in the light of many of our discussions here.

On Sept. 20, 1810, Thomas Jefferson wrote the following to one John
Colvin:

"To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law, would
be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those
who
are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the
means."

Interesting:

It seems to me that everyone here who have commented in support for a
"scrupulous adherence to written law" are also on record as supporting
the loss of our country.
