Well, it's not completely done yet but I'd kinda wanted to get this
out this weekend, so here we go. On my research trip to the San
Francisco NARA I went looking for USS San Francisco's damage report
for her night fight at Guadalcanal. NavSea had posted it before but
without photos, and I felt that it would be good to get the whole
thing online for those who want to read about the ship and modelers
looking for that last little bit of detail.

The report is online: http://www.researcheratlarge.com/Ships/CA38/GuadalcanalDamageRpt.html

It contains nearly 45 photos and three plates. Plates I and III are
linked to but not uploaded yet, so you will receive error messages if
you click on them for the next couple of days. All of the pictures are
posted and will enlarge if you click on them, albeit the reproduction
quality wasn't the best.

This document is also highly linkable, click on the "Highlight &
comment" link up top for instructions as to how, but if you want to
discuss any specific paragraph, any specific hit, you can send or post
that link. I just ask that you not embed the images in other sites
directly.

I would like to thank those, on this Independence Day, that fought for
our independence, and our freedoms. Posting this reminder of some of
those is one way I can pay my respects and offer my thanks.

Remember reading long time ago article in PROCEEDINGS of NAVAL
INSTITUTE which
diagramed hits on SAN FRANCISCO  - sketches showed location and
caliber of hits on
superstructure.

Is it the consensus of historians that USS San Francisco seriously
damaged USS Atlanta with "friendly fire"?  I thought that claim was in
dispute, leaning toward "no".

Per Wikipedia --

'At 01:25 on the 13th, a Japanese naval force was discovered about
27,000 yards (25,000 m) to the northwest. Rear Admiral Callaghan's task
group maneuvered to intercept in what became the first engagement in the
Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. At 01:48, in almost pitch darkness, San
Francisco opened fire on an enemy cruiser 3,700 yards (3,400 m) off her
starboard beam. At 01:51, she trained her guns on a small cruiser or
large destroyer 3,300 yards (3,000 m) off her starboard bow. Then in an
attempt to locate other targets, San Francisco accidentally targeted the
US light cruiser Atlanta. The San Francisco's gunfire caused extensive
damage to the already damaged Atlanta, plus killing Admiral Scott and
most of the Atlanta's bridge crew. Belatedly, the San Francisco realized
she was firing on a "friendly" ship and ceased fire. The green dye that
San Francisco used to distinguish her shells from those of other ships,
was later found stained on the Atlanta's superstructure before the
Atlanta sank. Shortly thereafter, the battleship Hiei was sighted and
taken under fire, at an initial range of only 2,200 yards (2,000 m).'

Interesting that a lot of hits estimated to be from 8" shells were
listed.  There was only one other ship with 8" guns in the battle,
the USN cruiser Portland (the IJN battleships' secondaries were 6.1").
Was there any indication that Portland may have fired on San Francisco?

There are lots of sizes listed and I don't know how many of them are
"correct;" how reliably can you tell the difference between a 5.5"
shell and a 6"? I have a comments link up top that will turn on
comments; I'm hoping to go through the history of this event and
provide comments and corrections, but I'm not familiar with the
details at all at this point so I'm open to any corrections or
comments anyone wants to send in.
