In the second half I visited Pakistan "in the footsteps of Alexander".

In a message posted earlier today, I wrote that I would gladly sacrifice
the entire *Aeneid* to get back another ancient text that is now lost.
Loosing an epic that Virgil wanted to be destroyed anyhow and gaining,
for example, the lost parts of Livy seems like a fair deal.

I've recently been reading a series of articles about Catal Huyuk,
perhaps the oldest known human settlement, and I realize how thrilling
ancient history can be.  Even so, I'm afraid my knowledge of it is
pretty hit-or-miss.

I am thinking of reading the Gathas.  Actually i've been thinking
about reading the Rig veda or one of the other ancient indian texts
also, but right now lets focus on the gathas.
Which translations are anyone here familiar with?  

Regardless of the actual day, which can vary by a few days, is this month
and year a actual Maya end-of-the-world date (according to their long count)
or just hyped rubbish.
If accurate, then do they say how we will meet our doom? asteroid? super

dogs were first domesticated.
I once read that dogs may have been the first animals domesticated by man.
