This is page one of a ten-page NY TIMES Magazine article that would be
of less new information to the been-there/knew-that <sci.environment>
news group, while general readers may enjoy the influential NYT's
access to Peter Maass' interesting professional writing.

When did they first get it?
Why did Hideyoshi not send Tokugawa to korea?27 Aug 2005 13:01 GMT5
Its in there.  After defeating local rivals in the japanese civil war
period, The japanese warlord,  Toyotomi Hideyoshi, launched an invasion
of korea and china.  It was a pretty lunatic undertaking, considering
he didn't have a real navy, and the campaign failed partly for that.

browse the books.
Possibly OT: Fill in the Blank...In 2005, the Sun never sets on the __________ "empire"25 Aug 2005 23:41 GMT4
Which countries around the world can still lay claim to this title?
Also, what criteria constitutes a valid claim for the sun never setting on
an "empire"?  How do protectorates, commonwealths, military bases,
Embassies, etc. fit into the equation?
