In the re-telling of the Martin Guerre story "Sommersby", set just after
the American civil war, there is a negro judge.  Were there really negro
judges in Southern USA just after the civil war?

Just started re-reading J. Thomas Scharf's book "History of the Confederate
States Navy".
The book was written shortly after the CW and Thomas was a CS Naval officer.
Thomas asserts that the performance of the United States Navy was the

I am researching the U.S.S. Mahopac, an ironclad in the Canonicus class
which participated in the assault on Ft. Fisher (Wilmington).
I've been all over the web and have read a couple dozen books on
the Civil War navy, ironclads, etc.
