Submachine gun oddity30 Apr 2004 05:34 GMT56
In looking at old photos and war movies, I notice that the
American soldiers all used lower capacity stick magazines
in their Thompson submachine guns.  Still older photos
seem to indicate that American gangsters and police used
Sonic booms30 Apr 2004 05:30 GMT12
(also known as sonic bangs...)
Some of the long range artillery used in WWII (both land and sea) had
supersonic muzzle velocities.  Some anti-aircraft and anti-tank
projectiles were also supersonic.

No overhead cover?28 Apr 2004 16:42 GMT11
Something that seems to be missing from movies about Infantry in WW2 is that
you almost never see overhead cover in foxholes...
I was watching 'Bastogne' from Band of Brothers, and I was reminded deeply
why you use 18" of overhead cover on a fighting position (foxhole)...

Lady Lampoon Club in Cairo, 194227 Apr 2004 00:59 GMT1
Hi friends -
Whilst reading and transcribing the recently discovered WW2 diaries of

Enemy at the Gates: Bad Movie/Good Book?26 Apr 2004 17:21 GMT1
I've read a lot of criticism about the movie version of "Enemy at the
Gates," but what about the book? I read the book several years ago, before I
even knew they were making a movie. I was curious if the book is a good
representation of what happened at Stalingrad? If not, is there ...
band of brothers26 Apr 2004 16:44 GMT10
Does anybody know what happened to Norman Dyke after Easy
Company's (101st airborne) attack on Foy? Was he killed while he stopped in
the field or was he sent back to HQ. If he did survive the attack does
anybody know what happened to his army career?
Riefenstahl's Propaganda Films25 Apr 2004 21:59 GMT4
In 1934, Leni Riefenstahl was chosen by Adolf Hitler to make the propaganda
film "Triumph of the Will". I've read that they're were other propaganda
films made by Riefenstahl before the war, but I can't find any details. Does
anyone know about any such films?
BAR LMG or Assault gun25 Apr 2004 21:55 GMT40

Flying Sergeants...25 Apr 2004 20:33 GMT5
I was reading Prange's books about Pearl Harbor, and a common theme keeps
popping up... That the Japanese had Petty Officers flying combat aircraft...
Someone told me that the US Army Air Corps started out with many Enlisted
pilots and had them throughout the war...
