American Motorcycle Troops31 Aug 2004 00:16 GMT26
Inspired by the question about British Motorcycle Troops, is there a source
about the evolution and disposition of similar American units? I have seen
wartime film footage about American units in training, ostensibly replacing
horse cavalry, but the motorcycle apparently did not ...
USSR Casualty Figures - 11-18 Million - Why?30 Aug 2004 16:31 GMT253
According to various casualty figures I have seen the USSR lost
between 6 and 11 million military service people and as many as 7
million civilians.  Its been some time since I studied WWII but I
don't recall why the USSR has such a disproportionate number of

The Eagle's Nest28 Aug 2004 15:24 GMT15
What ever happened to the Eagle's Nest and surrounding village as shown in
Band of Brothers. Was it destroyed? Is it open to tourists? Did people ever
repopulate and still populate the village the troops went into before
assending to the Eagle's Nest.
#1 Strategic Target in WW-II Germany28 Aug 2004 14:41 GMT86
The engines of the Luftwaffe needed high octane fuel. That is gasoline
with the addition of very small amounts of tetraethyl lead and ethylene
dibromide. A engine build for high octane gas usually will not run at all
by normal gas. It will destroy itself after some seconds. Engines ...
ex-German army in Vietnam27 Aug 2004 16:54 GMT1
The question arose here about German military equipment turning up in
Vietnam. An email correspondent recently told me about a soldier named
Lauri Allan Torni, born in Finland in 1919, a ski-troop leader in the
Winter War who afterward joined the German SS. After further service
The Intentional Mass Murder of German Civilians and POWs26 Aug 2004 00:40 GMT31
It's a matter of mathematics. If this can't be answered, then the answer is
uncovered. The Allies intentionally starved to death German civilian and
prisoners of war. The numbers don't add up. The German population today, should
be 90 million. Germany's population is listed at 82 ...
Der Untergang, movie on the fall of Berlin26 Aug 2004 00:40 GMT6
There will be a movie on the fall of Berlin 1945 out in September called
"Der Untergang" (trailer available at http://www.untergang.film.de).
Does anyone know how historically accurate this film is in plot and in
details?
Chicago "Met Lab" (Manh Proj)--long term health?26 Aug 2004 00:00 GMT10
There was a recent thread questioning if the crews of the planes
that delivered the atomic bombs to Japan suffered from health problems
as a result of their experience.  It appears they took precautions and
were not adversely affected.

I found my grandfather's divisional book. Something like a year book with the
divisions structure and photo's of every battalion member. I never knew what My
grandfather really did in the war. I heard he was a cook but I also heard he
was infantry. I know he did some driving. I ...

How did Germans ensure troop loyalty?21 Aug 2004 15:09 GMT5
How did the German armed forces ensure the loyalty of its troops to Hitler
in WWII?
As we all know, in the late 1920s and early 1930s, Hitler was a politician
looking for votes. His party obviously had political rivals, the chief of
