How many of them were used in combat and where? What was the reason of
keeping these regiments independent instead of putting them in some
division or creating a new division around them?

My great-grandfather, Jerry Eldridge, took the last flight out of Wake
Island under fire aboard PanAm's Philippine Clipper in December 1941
(he was a PanAm employee working on Wake Island).  Can anyone tell me
the date that this  Martin M-130 Clipper flew away from Wake?  Does
