Does anyone know who wrote the line, "They only deserve freedom who are prepared to defend it"? Google is unhelpful on this point. Thanks.

| Luftwaffe airborne radar | 29 Sep 2006 16:16 GMT | 3 |
Can anyone explain how the various Luftwaffe intercept radars did their direction differentiation? (i.e., up/down, left/right?) On British low frequency radars (i.e., not centimetric), it was done

I hope this query is in the right forum; if not, I'd appreciate some guiding. I'm translating a WWII tv series that contains a lot of period documentary footage.

| Were the Soviets poised to attack? | 27 Sep 2006 05:27 GMT | 60 |
History has not been kind to the Germans in some respects. Were the Germans completely wrong to fear an attack by the Soviet Union; which had over 5 million men stationed near the borders? Militarily speaking, could the attack be justified as a defensive measure? I say yes

| Hitler Vs Churchill | 26 Sep 2006 20:39 GMT | 138 |
There is a book by Andrew Roberts comparing Hitler and Churchill. Its not as well known as Allan Bullocks "Hitler and Stalin" who seem to be more an equal footing. I am wondering how Hitler can be compared to Churchill. Hitler came

| Bomber type | 25 Sep 2006 16:07 GMT | 1 |
On the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, a flight of B-17 bombers arrived over Hawaii, blundering into the Japanese attack. The question is: what model of the B-17? I have read they were B-17E type, but the one clear photo have seen of one of the destroyed

| The Mamayev Kurgan, Stalingrad | 25 Sep 2006 05:32 GMT | 1 |
This hill in Stalingrad (now Volgograd) was one of the most bitterly contested small patches of ground in WWII, with, say, Betio Atoll and Monte Cassino. Google Earth shows a good view of the great statue there, at 48 deg 44'

| RAF pilot John Aiken | 24 Sep 2006 20:55 GMT | 4 |
For a bio on a wartime RCAF nightfighter pilot, I'm trying to find out the full name of one of his squadronmates in 410 Squadron: an RAF pilot named John Aiken (sp?) who (my subject tells me) went on to be an air chief marshall in the postwar RAF. Any thought on how I could confirm
