       Thought she'd died years ago.
Anyhoo, Ida Tocino aka Tokyo Rose died yesterday
       in Chicago at age 90.
Seeking source for quote29 Sep 2006 22:02 GMT3
Does anyone know who wrote the line, "They only deserve freedom who are
prepared to defend it"?  Google is unhelpful on this point.
Thanks.
Luftwaffe airborne radar29 Sep 2006 16:16 GMT3
Can anyone explain how the various Luftwaffe intercept radars did their
direction differentiation?
(i.e., up/down, left/right?)
On British low frequency radars (i.e., not centimetric), it was done
"Cookie" - bomb?27 Sep 2006 21:34 GMT45
I hope this query is in the right forum; if not, I'd appreciate some
guiding.
I'm translating a WWII tv series that contains a lot of period documentary
footage.
Were the Soviets poised to attack?27 Sep 2006 05:27 GMT60
History has not been kind to the Germans in some respects. Were the Germans
completely wrong to fear an attack by the Soviet Union; which had over 5
million men stationed near the borders? Militarily speaking, could the
attack be justified as a defensive measure? I say yes
Hitler Vs Churchill26 Sep 2006 20:39 GMT138
There is a book by Andrew Roberts comparing Hitler and Churchill. Its
not as well known as Allan Bullocks "Hitler and Stalin" who seem to be
more an equal footing.
I am wondering how Hitler can be compared to Churchill. Hitler came

I've just seen an episode of 'LOVEJOY" on the TV. (for those that don't
know "lovejoy" is a fictional series about an antiques dealer)
In this particular episode he gets hold of a 17th C canon from the
english civil. The story line goes that it was found on an old airfield
Bomber type25 Sep 2006 16:07 GMT1
On the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, a flight of B-17 bombers arrived over
Hawaii, blundering into the Japanese attack.
The question is: what model of the B-17? I have read they were B-17E
type, but the one clear photo  have seen of one of the destroyed
The Mamayev Kurgan, Stalingrad25 Sep 2006 05:32 GMT1
This hill in Stalingrad (now Volgograd) was one of the most bitterly
contested small patches of ground in WWII, with, say, Betio Atoll and Monte
Cassino.
Google Earth shows a good view of the great statue there, at 48 deg 44'

RAF pilot John Aiken24 Sep 2006 20:55 GMT4
For a bio on a wartime RCAF nightfighter pilot, I'm trying to find out
the full name of one of his squadronmates in 410 Squadron: an RAF pilot
named John Aiken (sp?) who (my subject tells me) went on to be an air
chief marshall in the postwar RAF. Any thought on how I could confirm

Does anyone know what model this T-34/76 is that they pulled out of
this lake?  It was found SW of Leningrad but abandoned by the Germans
when they pulled out of the area.
