Letters from Iwo Jima28 Feb 2007 17:40 GMT1
The film alluded to an archeological discovery of buried letters found 50+
year after the battle.
I'm curious but has there been any archelogical works on the island? And did
they find letters? I'm sure the descendents of the soldiers would be
French Civilian Telephone System during the occupation and post invasion28 Feb 2007 17:28 GMT12
What was the status of the French telephone system in the occupied and
Vichy parts of France during the war?
Was it disabled or allowed to operate under German supervision?  If
the latter, how did the Germans go about monitoring it...  Did they

Europe before WW2 imported food. With the start of WW2, the British

attacked Russia this soon stop too. In NAZI dominated Europe food
shortages were common and rationing, even in Germany, was strict. Some

I recently found a German photo book on the French campaign of the
Totenkopf division. It contains a inscription that I believe to be
printed, but I am not sure. Is there anybody here that can read the
text?
RCAF -- assaulting an officer20 Feb 2007 05:52 GMT2
I know of a case in December, 1940, in which a Leading Aircraftsman
who had just graduated as a pilot from #2 Service Flying School at
Uplands, in Ottawa, punched out his commanding officer at a grauation
party. He was immediately demoted to "AC2 (Amended)," assigned to

Which US Division left the most blood in Dutch soil?19 Feb 2007 23:38 GMT17
Which US Division had the most men killed in combat in the Netherlands?
I believe the only candidates are: 2ID, 7AD, 30ID, 82AB, 101AB, 82AB.
This is NOT a question of which of these divisions lost the most men in the
war -- but specifically deaths in Holland (or DOW deaths ...

Looking for any information about a wicker wine case holding two bottles
of wine which was retrieved from a wine cellar on the estate of Field
Marshall Erwin Rommel's family after World War II. Specifically, I'd
like to determine where the case was made (looks like Italian

British 3 pdr14 Feb 2007 01:47 GMT7
A little pre- WWII, but hopeflly someone here might know.  The Vickers
Medium Mk II and it's variants had AFAIK a 3pdr (47mm) 2cwt QF gun as
the main weapon.  Now I know that larger caliber pre-war weapons
usually had lower velocity and therefore less armor penetration, but I
Winter War in the East 1941-4213 Feb 2007 23:11 GMT1
Does anyone know of a book that specifically covers the period when
the German army was on the defensive in the winter of 1941-42. Its
mentioned in all general books on the eastern front, how the german
army held on to isolated positions etc and were often supplied by air,
WW II Unit Rosters13 Feb 2007 21:17 GMT4
Is there someplace online that contains lists of unit or troop rosters?
In particular, I'm looking for a unit roster and duty assignments for
the 294th Joint Assault Signal Company on D-Day.
Thanks!  -Walt
